Our Mission

The agri-food sector is characterized by globalization and international trade relations. It is therefore a significant advantage to participate in an international master program taught in English to acquire necessary interdisciplinary and intercultural skills for a successful career. The Master program “Agricultural and Food Economics” (AFECO) at Bonn University has achieved an internationally outstanding position in fields such as communication in food chain management and economic modelling. Our students benefit from our international orientation beyond the Master of Science in the two year AFECO Study program. Students can sharpen their profile by choosing a specialization in one of the following fields: Agribusiness (ABS), Resource and Environmental Economics (ENV), Market and Consumer Research (MAC), Agricultural and Development Policy (APO). Please find more on the study profile here.

AFECO, alone or in combination with one of the Double-Degree programs, provides excellent opportunities at the highest international standard, prepares for doctoral studies and involves active cooperations with public and private research institutes in the field of agricultural and resource economics.

The international orientation of the AFECO-Master program attracts students from all over the world and guarantees an international learning atmosphere.
In addition to the regular AFECO program, our students can participate in two Double-Degree Programs that support international mobility during their master and prepare them even better for the international labor market.

Aims

Our students gain theoretical and methodological knowledge and skills from state-of-the-art level scientific debate, which prepare them for leadership positions and sophisticated scientific work on economic questions in the agri-food-sector.

We encourage holistic thinking along the whole value chain, from farmer to consumer and from local to global scale to prepare our graduates for a successful start into their professional career. Our study program reflects the diversity of potential employers in agribusiness, the food industry, NGOs, public authorities as well as public and private research institutes. It supports a strong personal development.

Our master program offers a balance between professional qualification and research-orientation and builds on high didactical standards in teaching. We provide the opportunity and encourage students to actively take part in research projects of the institute.

Personality Development

Adequate teaching formats encourage the development of problem-solving competence and skills needed for individual and team-oriented positions in management and research. Students further develop related expertise by exam formats such as presentations, individual seminar papers and papers from group work.

We support individual profiling, not least by offering master and minor orientations, and foster the development of professional maturity throughout the study program in order to guarantee purposeful, efficient and successful graduation. Our graduates have proven to be professionally competent and willing to take responsibility both in society and their professional life as future executives and managers.

Organisation

The Institute for Food and Resource Economics (ILR) is responsible for the content and organization of the AFECO master program with most of the courses being instructed by staff members of the institute to set up a well-designed and highly integrated course program. Guest lecturers from the private and public sector bring in their expertise to support professional orientation.

ILR as an internationally cooperating institute offers a strong profile in mathematical modelling, policy advice and food chain management. Our well-developed network of renowned agri-economic research institutes at national and global level not only fosters a high-level, research oriented program with an excellent visibility, but also directly benefits our students by offering PhD positions following the master in international research projects.
The international orientation is also reflected in our two double-degree programs seamlessly integrated in the AFECO program.
